4 worker representatives still in custody; Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Workers’ strikes and protests continue

Haft Tapeh Sugarcane cane workers are continuing their strike and protest actions. Today is the 17th day of their recent strike against privatization of the company (demanding the return of the company to the Public Sector due to its prominence for the economy and the whole area as well as the rampant corruption by the new owners and management) and for the payment of their unpaid wages.

Workers have been staging sit-ins outside Shoush Judiciary and Shoush Governor office demanding their arrested colleagues to be freed. All arrested workers’ representatives with the exception of Esmail Bakhshi, Mohammad Khannifar, Moslem Armand and Seyed Hassan Fazeli have been released for now. After negotiations between workers' representatives with various government officials today, the above 4 were supposed to be released on bail this afternoon. They had been charged with "Disturbing Public Order". However, government and judiciary officials changed their mind last minutes and kept all four of them, as well as Ms. Sepideh Gholian who is a reporter, in custody. It has been reported that the Intelligence and Judiciary are trying to come up with sham national security charges against the above 4 worker representatives.

Thousands of workers and their families have been protesting on the streets of the City of Shoush for the past few days. Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Company is a major industry in the Khuzestan Province and tens of thousands of people in the surrounding areas rely on that for their employment and overall financial well-being. However, after the privatization of the company, workers have been facing more complex problems and millions of dollars that were supposed to be spent to enhance the company and employment have disappeared while workers have been facing wage theft and other systemic problems.

Please see the email as well as the links below for more information. Please send protest letters to the Iranian government authorities demanding the release of the remaining four worker representatives and the detained reporter and an end to persecution of the striking workers.

Sample Protest letter (Free Haft Tapeh sugarcane workers)

On behalf of ……I write to protest in the strongest possible terms against the actions of Iranian government authorities in arresting and detaining striking Haft Tapeh sugarcane workers and to express our serious concern over reports of the ill-treatment of individuals who have been arrested and detained.

We understand that all representatives of the Haft Tape Sugar Cane Industry have recently been arrested and sent to an unknown location. As of today, four of these workers are still in custody; they are Esmail Bakhshi, Moslem Armand, Seyed Hassan Fazeli, and Mohammad Khanifar. We also understand that a journalist, Sepideh Gholian, has also been arrested and detained.

I/We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees. Workers have the right to strike and protest for their interests. Haft Tapeh Sugarcane workers have been struggling against the privatization of the company, management corruption and for their unpaid wages. Your government must respect workers’ rights according to the international conventions ad ought to stop the persecution and prosecution of striking workers and independent workers’ organisations.

Subject: Urgent call: Free Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Workers’ Representatives
To:

Free Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Workers’ Representatives

Representatives of the striking workers of the Haft Tape Sugar Cane Industry were arrested and sent to an unknown location today. As of this time, no information is available about their whereabouts. Names of the arrested workers include: Esmai Bakhshi, Moslem Arman, Pouya Bashmeh, Saeed Mansouri, Jalil Ahmadi, Azim Sorkheh, Mehdi Davoodi, Saeed Alkasir, Alizadeh, Omid Azadi, Seyed Hassan Fazeli, Samir Ahmadi, Salamat Nia, Emad Kasir, Mahmoud Saadi, , Moslem Armand; Mohammad Khanifar and Khaled Tamimi. In addition, a reporter was also arrested today. Her name is Sepideh Gholian.

Immediately after the arrest of these worker representatives, their lawyer reached us to the Public Prosecutor office of the city of Shoush, but the Prosecutor reported that he had not yet received a report on the source and reason for the arrest of these workers.

Workers’ organizations in Iran including the Syndicate of Workers of Haft Tapeh Sugarcane Company have strongly condemned the use of security forces against the workers of the Haft-Tapeh sugar cane company and the arrest and beatings of workers and demand the immediate and unconditional release of all detained workers.

The recent wave of strike by the Haft Tapeh sugar cane workers, which is now entering its fifteenth day, has been against the privatization and breakdown of the company, corruption by the management of the company, and the non-payment of workers' wages and benefits. Instead of resorting to oppressing workers, the government and government officials ought to be accountable for their anti-worker policies, including severe blows to the Haft Tapeh sugarcane industry, which has devastated the working and living conditions of thousands of working-class families. Workers have been protesting on the street of the City of Shoush for the past 6 days. Striking workers have vowed that these repressive measures will not deter their will and determination (see the tweets below).

Please send strong protest letters to the Iranian government authorities demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all arrested workers.
