Syrian refugee tripped by Hungarian camerawoman accused of ties to militants

WASHINGTON – The Syrian man tripped by a Hungarian camerawoman in a video that went viral in early September has been accused of being a member of a terrorist organization and perpetrating the murder of civilians in his native country.
The Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) released a statement Friday accusing Osama Abdul Mohsen of being a member of the al-Nusra Front – an al-Qaeda offshoot in Syria.
“Osama Abdul joined the rebel groups in 2011 and committed crimes against civilian minorities, including Kurds,” the PYD statement read.
The PYD confirmed that a social media account belonging to Mohsen showed a picture of him supporting al-Nusra before the account was deactivated and called on the Spanish government to hold him accountable for his crimes.
According to the PYD, Mohsen was living in the town of Tel Abyad before Kurdish forces took control of it last July, following weeks of intense clashes with militants.
Mohsen’s life was transformed last week when he was invited to join a Spanish soccer coaching academy and put up in a Madrid apartment after media reported that he had been a soccer coach in the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zour.
He and his sons Ziad, 7, and Mohammed, 18, were welcomed in the Spanish capital on Friday by players from Real Madrid F.C., including Cristiano Ronaldo and club president Florentino Perez.
